Please spread the word among your mainstream friends and acquaintances.  Those of us already involved in the permaculture movement know that there IS life (a better life!) after Peak Oil–but many in the mainstream don’t have a clue about why what we’re doing is so important for THEM.  In the post-Peak era, living sustainably won’t be an “alternative lifestyle:”  it will be the way everyone HAS TO live if they want to survive.  This film will help them draw that conclusion.

Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream. The film “The End of Suburbia” introduced the concept of Peak Oil (the point at which world-wide oil production peaks, and after which it declines). Now, in “Escape from Suburbia,” theory gives way to reality as a global debate rages over when demand will outpace supply.  The new film documents the emerging movement of citizens’ groups confronting our addiction to oil and follows individuals from different walks of life, along with a small California town, as they take on the most dramatic shift in modern history.

Escape from Suburbia is a wake-up call that challenges the illusion of never-ending growth based on the availability of cheap and abundant oil. Expert opinion and commentary from government and industry are countered by on-the-street skepticism from a growing segment of the population who’ve had personal experiences with natural disasters, rising gas prices and fragile energy grids. In Escape from Suburbia, viable local alternatives for citizens and communities are explored to ensure the survival of a sustainable civilization in the 21st Century and beyond.

Room for Rent

I am a single mom with two kids and a 1/2 acre just outside the city limits on Coburg Rd.   My kids and I have a plan for our half acre that is in the beginning stages.  We have already planted an orchard with 15 semi-dwarf fruit trees(2 years old) and have acquired 2 goats to eat all the blackberries and thistle weeds.  We plan to build a large raised bed vegetable/herb garden, plant berry/grape vines, keep chickens and bees, and eventually raise a pig every year for meat.  We want to create a native bird friendly shrubbery habitat to replace the blackberry overgrowth on the side of the house–we love having such a variety of bird sounds outside.  We want to accomplish this in the most organic and environmentally sound way possible.  I am looking for someone who would be interested in living with us (and helping us) as we create this ecosystem on our property.   The room is upstairs and private.  It is fairly large and includes a walk in closet, attic storage space and a private bathroom.  The cost is $300 per month (this includes all utilities, use of the kitchen, a private pantry to keep food and kitchen supplies and a bed if you need it).  Some work for rent available–especially if you  know about goats.  Interested parties can e-mail me at alyse.hayes@gmail.com or leave a message on my home phone: 342-8426 to arrange a  visit.  Pets ok as long as they get along with ours. 8^)

PERMAPALOOZA! An Open Invitation to All EPG Members

Filed under: events, Announcements, From individuals — denise4peace @ 9:00 am

Sink your Creative Teeth into a brand new Permaculture Design Demonstration Site in it’s infancy!

PermaPalooza!
Hosts:  Denise-Christine and Pat Driscoll
1355 Taft Street
Saturday AND Sunday:  Sept 22-23, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm
RSVP denise4peace@hotmail.com or 688-1442

In the interest of avoiding food waste, we STRONGLY ENCOURAGE RSVPs!
Denise-Christine and Pat Driscoll, newcomers to Eugene and the EPG, would like to tap into your collective permaculture wisdom in developing our Bethel/Danebo property into a Permaculture Demonstration site worthy of one of Jan Spencer’s future ecotours.
We invite you to join us for Eugene’s first-ever PERMAPALOOZA!
During the weekend of September 22 and 23, between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm, our property will be open on a drop-by, come-as-you-are basis to all members of the Eugene Permaculture Guild.  Activities will include:
Meet, Greet and Get-To-Know-You (EPG and Microcommunity Members)
Property Tours (.4 acres with lots of potential)
PermaPalooza Mapping Exercises*
Lounging in Hammocks
Noshing with other Permies
And (of course!) Food and Refreshment.  The focus will be on fresh, local, and organic.
·        PermaPalooza Mapping Exercise:  Pat and I have a list of features to be included in our demonstration site, ranging from chickens to bees to gray water to a composting toilet.  Also a Green Cottage (probably to be constructed by our housemate, Bob, who’s a straw-bale builder).  We have lots of ideas of our own, but we could use your experience!

Each participant will be given a map of the property, a working plan of the cottage, a pencil and a list of features.  Map out your vision for the property.  Indulge your creative Green Spirit.  Help us avoid expensive mistakes and make the most of the time we have left before EOTWAWKI!  We also have some plants we don’t recognize—and some of them are in places we don’t want them to be, but we don’t want to yank out anything until we know what it is!
We hope the extended, informal time frame will give us a chance to really visit with each of you when you show up—and give you the flexibility you need to be able to join us, with all the other things you have on your plate!
We’d like to see PermaPalooza become a regular feature of the EPG.  PermaPalooza could be as big as a weekend or as small and spontaneous as “Anyone who can, show up tomorrow at 6:00 pm.” To assist EPG members with brainstorming, solution discovery or work partying.
Hope to see you here!  **Peace, Denise & Pat**
